Understanding this recall

What happened

Taylor Fresh Foods (Taylor Farms) is recalling Salsa Roja Medium, one of a large group of fresh salsas, dips, salads and ready-to-eat foods, because of potential Salmonella contamination.

Why it matters

Salmonella bacteria can cause salmonellosis, with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that usually start 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most people recover within a week, but young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill. Foods eaten raw or uncooked, like fresh peppers, salsa, sprouts and powders, can't be made safe by the consumer. Many of these items contain raw jalapeño or other fresh vegetables and are meant to be eaten without cooking.
