Understanding this recall
What happened
Taylor Farms de Mexico is recalling Marketside Iceberg Salad 10/24 Oz, one of many food-service lettuce and salad products sold under several brand names, because of potential Cyclospora contamination.
Why it matters
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh produce. It causes cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness whose main symptom is watery diarrhea, often with cramping, bloating, nausea and fatigue. Symptoms typically start about a week after exposure and can last weeks without treatment. Washing produce does not reliably remove it. These are mostly bulk food-service packs, like 4/5 lb cases, so the products may reach diners through restaurants and cafeterias.
Who should pay attention
Restaurants, cafeterias and other food-service operators in the states listed below, and anyone who bought the listed retail salad packs.
Distribution in the FDA report: Domestic: AL, AR, CT, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WI. (Subway distribution limited to: AR, LA, and TX) Foreign: Mexico.
