Understanding this recall

What happened

International Sprout Holdings is recalling 50 lb bags of alfalfa seed because of potential E. coli and Salmonella contamination.

Why it matters

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), such as O157:H7 or O145, can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Some people, especially young children and older adults, develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. Raw sprouts and produce eaten uncooked are known sources. This is bulk seed sold to sprout growers and other businesses; other recalls of sprouting products this period trace back to recalled alfalfa seed.

Who should pay attention

Sprout growers, distributors and other wholesale buyers. Consumers may be affected through products made from this seed.
